March 2015 - Floods, Golfing, Connecting, and Sales!

Good Morning, Happy Wednesday!

Goodbye cruel snow...hello flooded viaducts!  Ahhh... Spring in Chicago.   Can you beat it?

Uhhh...YES.  OF COURSE.  And many of us have fled this month for spring break.  I wish all of you safe travels and am already jealous of the pictures I've been seeing on Facebook over the past few weeks.  I, personally, am heading south later today for my
(9th) annual golf pilgrimage.  Along with 11 other friends, we will open our season hacking around beautiful Reynolds Plantation outside of Atlanta for five un-snowy rounds.  Then in a few short weeks, The Masters will throw more fuel on my golfing fire.  I'm glad I have a cool wife.

I feel blessed to be out every day meeting an eclectic group of people and businesses.  This monthly digest reflects my journey through sharing new sales & business ideas, Chicagoland happenings, new music for your soundtrack, and other things that caught my eye along the way.  I always appreciate your replies, thoughts, and ideas  - as well as taking time out to enjoy it.

Featured Colleague

Helix Health - motivated by the need for improved engagement tools and armed with technological expertise, this company is changing the healthcare landscape. I've had the pleasure of working with them at 1871 as they began the quest for affordable online healthcare.  Their technology enables secure video consultations and patient control of personal health information. Partnership with Helix Medical Group provides users access to preventative care in between regular visits with their doctor.  In addition, Helix's subscription plans provide the value of interactive health education and self-management tools for users with chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension.

Sales Beat

The concept of "mirroring" your prospect is nothing new.  For some people, it simply organic, but many of us have to give it a little thought.  Here are 10 good tips/reminders on body language adjustments that could help you in that next important interaction.

When meeting new people, you need to display genuine curiosity, followed by thoughtful generosity.  Regardless if you can help someone directly, start first by helping them indirectly.  I love this article discussing three thoughts on why being a connector leads to long-term success.

Jeffrey Gitomer has always been one of my favorite sales gurus - his writing is funny, straight-forward, and on-point.  Here he talks about how the old way of selling is dead and what you need to be doing instead.

What I'm Up To

We are starting Sales Leadership Roundtables at Sales Empowerment Group.  Please be on the lookout, via LinkedIn, for an announcement.  Thank you, in advance, for taking a quick look and passing along to sales executives that may have interest.

This year I am coordinating an informal monthly gathering at TopGolf in Wood Dale.  This futuristic driving range is golf, darts, and bowling combined into one.  If you are interested, please write me back to be included in the distro list with dates/times.

In continued support of IL Fatherhood Initiative, I am doing LinkedIn Lunch-n-Learn sessions.  In lieu of payment, I'm accepting donations in support of their cause: Actively engaging fathers in the education of their children.  If you know anyone that would have interest, please drop me a quick note - thanks!

Off Beat

I once had the thrill of rock-climbing in Lake Tahoe - even with a rope anchored high above me, I was terrified and trembling.  While I wasn't hanging upside down or anything, the wall was at a straight-up, 90 degree angle - fairly similar to the one this guy climbs amazingly fast with no ropes!

After reading an article about personality types, I hopped online to take the Myers Briggs assessment.  Drumroll please...(dzzzzzzzzzzzup!) ENFP: "The Campaigner".  This means I'm an energetic, curious, friendly communicator that tends to be emotional, independent and can lose focus.  I immediately thought... kind of reminds me of this newsletter!  If you'd like to take assess yourself for free online, spend 10 minutes here.  It was very insightful and interestingly, spot on.

Chicagoland

Almost too many entertaining options in Chicagoland.  After 14 years here, I've crossed off 52 of these 101 Things To Do in Chicago.

Music

Spotify Playlist - I originally made this play list a couple years ago.  Most contain lyrics that in some way, shape, or form reminded me of my sales career.  Regardless of your profession, this is a fun playlist of sing-a-longs describing life's ups and downs.

Drumming - while there are many, many great drummer jokes, new studies (including at Oxford and Harvard) show that drummers are actually smarter than most (Hey, I'm only showing you what science has to say...).  But if you insist, here are ten good drummer jokes anyway.

Quotes

Art is either plagiarism or revolution. -
Paul Gauguin (1848-1903)

Friendship is being there when someone's feeling low and not being afraid to kick them. - Randy K. Milholland

You can't turn a No into a Yes without a Maybe in between - Frank Underwood (House of Cards)

Most human beings have an almost infinite capacity for taking things for granted -  Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)

The two most common elements in the universe are Hydrogen and stupidity.  - Harlan Ellison

Couldn't resist that last quote with April Fool's day approaching...  I hope you enjoyed the newsletter and found something of value for yourself or someone you know.  Thank you again for your remarks, recommendations, and referrals that many of you have shared.
