April 2015 - Playoffs, Power Words, 100+ Who Care, and SALES!

Good Morning, Happy Friday!

Hey sports fans - the Blackhawks & Bulls are playoff-ing and the Cubbies are (kinda) winning - I'll take it!  As usual, lots of Spring activity in the city, but I've been busy elsewhere.  I was fortunate this month to visit a couple of my favorite places -  Bell's brewery in Kalamazoo for some freshly-tapped Oberon, and two trips to Colorado (one business, one pleasure).  During my leisure trip out west, I saw my first game at Coors Field for opening day against the Cubbies (who unfortunately lost that one).

I feel blessed to be out every day meeting an eclectic group of people and businesses.  This monthly digest reflects my journey through sharing new sales & business ideas, Chicagoland happenings, new music for your soundtrack, and other things that caught my eye along the way.  I always appreciate your replies, thoughts, and ideas  - as well as taking time out to enjoy it.

Featured Charity

100+ Who Care Chicago - simple idea - BIG IMPACT.  I am honored to be on the steering committee for the Chicago chapter.   In a nutshell...
  • 100+ people show up (May 14th in West Loop), each with a blank $100 check.
  • During a cocktail hour & keynote celebrity speaker, you can put a charity’s name “in the hat”.
  • Three are drawn, each person gets a few minutes to speak on the charity’s behalf.
  • Everyone votes and one charity walks away with $10,000+.
Yes - you can win your charity $10,000+ in one night.  EVENT DETAILS & REGISTRATION HERE (We are capping this FREE event at 200 - so could be $20K!)

Sales Beat

Over the last six months I've been following author/speaker John Spence.  In a recent blog he gives his recipe for sales success.  Competence + Concern + Curiosity x Character = Sales Success.  Love it - read more about the principles here.

Word choice.  It's so critical in the world of sales.  You must choose wisely, as the most subtle tweaks can mean the difference between winning and losing a long-term relationship.  Read this article about 13 different phrasing options that could help you sound sharp & articulate, as opposed to sales-y and condescending.

Here are some recent articles I've published - How to Avoid being that Pesky Salesman and Offbeat?  Refresh Yourself by Doing This (a simple meditation method I use).

What I'm Up To

In mid-May, SEG is kicking off a Sales Leaders Forum.  This is for managers, directors, and VP's that directly manage sales teams.  Details and event registration -- CLICK HERE --

In continued support of IL Fatherhood Initiative, I am doing LinkedIn Lunch-n-Learn sessions.  In lieu of payment, I'm accepting donations in support of their cause: Actively engaging fathers in the education of their children.  If your company would have interest, please drop me a quick note - thanks!

Off Beat

This art exhibit blew my mind.  You can find this Chicago-based artist's work at her Superior St. studio.  In a nutshell, she can recreate a face by finding DNA off a piece of chewed gum on the sidewalk - CRAZY!

Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google - they are all synonymous with progress & innovation.  This funny, fast-paced, info-packed talk takes some jabs and makes predictions on the future of these "Four Horseman" (given by Scott Galloway, entrepreneur & NYU's Professor of Marketing - sharp & sharp-tongued).

Chicagoland

Need some new date ideas going into this summer?  Take a look at this list to help get you off the beaten path and trying something new.

Music

George Ezra
 - I immediately loved this guy's sound from the first few chords.  He's a young talent from the UK and has a smooth sound - check out his catchy hit single - Budapest.
