April 2015 - Playoffs, Power Words, 100+ Who Care, and SALES!

Good Morning, Happy Friday!

Hey sports fans - the Blackhawks & Bulls are playoff-ing and the Cubbies are (kinda) winning - I'll take it!  As usual, lots of Spring activity in the city, but I've been busy elsewhere.  I was fortunate this month to visit a couple of my favorite places -  Bell's brewery in Kalamazoo for some freshly-tapped Oberon, and two trips to Colorado (one business, one pleasure).  During my leisure trip out west, I saw my first game at Coors Field for opening day against the Cubbies (who unfortunately lost that one).

I feel blessed to be out every day meeting an eclectic group of people and businesses.  This monthly digest reflects my journey through sharing new sales & business ideas, Chicagoland happenings, new music for your soundtrack, and other things that caught my eye along the way.  I always appreciate your replies, thoughts, and ideas  - as well as taking time out to enjoy it.

This art exhibit blew my mind.  You can find this Chicago-based artist's work at her Superior St. studio.  In a nutshell, she can recreate a face by finding DNA off a piece of chewed gum on the sidewalk - CRAZY!

March 2015 - Floods, Golfing, Connecting, and Sales!

Good Morning, Happy Wednesday!

Goodbye cruel snow...hello flooded viaducts!  Ahhh... Spring in Chicago.   Can you beat it?

Uhhh...YES.  OF COURSE.  And many of us have fled this month for spring break.  I wish all of you safe travels and am already jealous of the pictures I've been seeing on Facebook over the past few weeks.  I, personally, am heading south later today for my
(9th) annual golf pilgrimage.  Along with 11 other friends, we will open our season hacking around beautiful Reynolds Plantation outside of Atlanta for five un-snowy rounds.  Then in a few short weeks, The Masters will throw more fuel on my golfing fire.  I'm glad I have a cool wife.

I once had the thrill of rock-climbing in Lake Tahoe - even with a rope anchored high above me, I was terrified and trembling.  While I wasn't hanging upside down or anything, the wall was at a straight-up, 90 degree angle - fairly similar to the one this guy climbs amazingly fast with no ropes!

After reading an article about personality types, I hopped online to take the Myers Briggs assessment.  Drumroll please...(dzzzzzzzzzzzup!) ENFP: "The Campaigner".  This means I'm an energetic, curious, friendly communicator that tends to be emotional, independent and can lose focus.  I immediately thought... kind of reminds me of this newsletter!  If you'd like to take assess yourself for free online, spend 10 minutes here.  It was very insightful and interestingly, spot on.

Drumming - while there are many, many great drummer jokes, new studies (including at Oxford and Harvard) show that drummers are actually smarter than most (Hey, I'm only showing you what science has to say...).  But if you insist, here are ten good drummer jokes anyway.

Feb 2015 - Oscars, Traffic, Bonnaroo, and Sales!

Good Afternoon, Happy Tuesday!

Two takeaways from the Oscars on Sunday night...

  1. Birdman - I watched the first third of this movie over the holidays, found it totally confusing and annoying, and turned it off.  I shared this with one of my friends who said, "How couldyou not like that movie?  The whole soundtrack is drumming?!".  Considering that fact (which is a pretty interesting story) and since it won Best Picture, I'm going to give it another shot.

  2. The Martin Scorsese Apple Commercial - I'm on an 'action-packed' kick this year and this commercial inspired me.  Talk is cheap.  Watch the commercial and here are five other great points from Martin's 2014 NYU commencement address.

The summer I was supposed to graduate, I did an in internship at ADP.  My job was simple, yet overwhelming - cold-call every business, in every building, in downtown Chicago.  I had three months to do it.  When it was over, I was hooked on sales.  It was the thrill of creating something from nothing.  Here are five more reasons to love sales.

Shark Tank's entrepreneur fan-base continues to grow and for good reason.  It's an entrepreneurs substitute for The Bachelor.  The 'sharks' on the show have amazing tales of success and failure. Here is one of them sharing their Top 10 Tips for Entrepreneurs.

Stories stick in our head.  No one remembers bullet points on a Powerpoint presentation.  How do you manage to not only tell your company's story, but also your own?  Many variables at play, and I always see people struggle here - too much, too little, too confusing, too many acronyms, not adapting to their audience.  My friends at locally-based Square Planet offer some great ideas about story-telling and how to engage your audience.

What I'm Up To

Things are busy with work as we prepare to move our office out of Willis Tower and up to River North.  The new office space is getting completely gutted and will provide us with a state-of-the-art facility.  I'll miss the views from the 46th floor, but will gladly ditch the security dance and riding multiple elevators.  See you at State & Hubbard as of April 1st (no joke)!

Sadly, it seems that not a month goes by when I don't hear about someone getting cancer.  All types, all ages, and all over the country.  The statistics are starting to scare me, but this TED talk was both stunning and enlightening.

Long ago, I used to call myself a "social smoker."  Tackling that idea, this is one of the funniest anti-smoking commercials I have ever seen (disclaimer: bodily function ahead that my 18-month-old thinks is the funniest thing in town right now).

Chicagoland

As a little kid riding in the backseat of the car, I remember thinking about how cool it would be to have a bridge from wherever we were, to my final destination - as the crow flies.  And now as a big kid driving that car (in Chicago rush-hour), I STILL think about how cool that would be.  So, while drumming on the steering wheel helps get me through it, I'll still dream.  The podcast "Curious City" discusses Chicago traffic patterns, complete with graphs - good stuff.

Music

Spotify Playlist - February always brings the announcement of summer festival line-ups.  I still like to peruse the bands, sadly knowing full well I will not be going.  While Lindsay and I plan to continue to attend at least one family-friendly fest a year,Bonnaroo does not fall into that category.  If I were magically 25 years-old again and mostly responsibility-free, the bands on this playlist are the ones I'd go watch.

Drumming Clip - for those of you that think John Henry Bonham was the greatest drummer of all time, he actually learned all his moves from this guy.

January 2015 - Whistling, Neighborhoods, Clean Water, and Sales!

Good Morning, Happy Thursday!

New Year's resolutions: Are yours still riding co-pilot?  Or are they in the rear-view?  I've personally had mixed results...  I was a vegetarian for like 4 days straight, but that was more of an accident than a resolution.  I have worked out a few times, but not at 5:30AM like I envisioned (...do people really do that?!  Props if you're one of them.)

Professional resolutions are going a bit better, and I'll discuss more below.  As far as the palm trees go, they are courtesy of sunny LA where I spent Christmas.  I just like being reminded...

For many sales professionals, email is the main form of prospect/client communication.  Honing this skill will show that you are educated and respect people's time.  Your message must be distilled, while assuring understanding and promoting action.  Here are 10 tips/reminders that I agree with across the board.

"I hate change" is one of the most popular cop-out objections heard when selling any service.  For many, hard to disagree with this sentiment.  But in professional selling, you must find a way to help people embrace transformation.  I took some time to debate the idea of change on this blogpost, hosted by my friends at Black Jade Creative.

What I'm Up To

I spent Christmas out in California with my family.  It was the first time I've been out of the Midwest for the holidays, and it was weird eating Christmas dinner outside, but no complaints.  While visiting the beaches of Malibu, my daughter helped me realize a New Year's resolution that I have kept.  I'm getting inspired more and creative juices are flowing.  I wrote more about those ideas here.

In 2014, I found myself also doing a number of LinkedIn profile re-writes.  After extremely positive feedback, I'm offering rewrites as a business service.  When you or your company are ready for a "tune-up" contact me for details about the process and related costs.

Favorites of 2014 - BLINK!

Another year, another dozen newsletters, 583 hours of surfing the web, and countless people & moments for which to be grateful.  I say it every month, but I am genuinely thankful to be out every day meeting & collaborating with such an eclectic cast of characters (like you), who inspire me to learn more, work hard, and embrace my career.  I'm thankful for my awesome family - my amazing wife, who is starting her own new-parent education business, and for this ornery one pictured, who knows she's not supposed be touching those ornaments (but knows she's too cute for me to really do too much about it).
